I was reading this comparison post between the iPhone 4s and the Droid Bionic and it got me thinking – besides the phones themselves and their specifics, why do you have a smartphone? What do you do with it? I’d love to see why other people have theirs and maybe get some new ideas for how to use my smartphone.

Back to School 2011! Get psyched!

Did I date myself by saying “get psyched!”? It’s that time of year again, back to school time. I’ve been trying to help a niece and a cousin get ready for college this year and so I’ve decided the first Back to School post this year would be things you need for college. Most of these assume that you’ve a freshman living in a dorm, but many could be useful despite your year status or dorm status.

Please post in the comments if there is an item you think I’ve missed or if there is something else that really helped you get ready for college.

Almost every phone these days has a digital camera built in. But what if you want more? You want better zoom, more precise shooting, or just manually adjusting the shutter speed or aperture? You can’t do that on every phone. So here’s a quick how to for picking a digital camera to use in the place of or in combination with you camera phone.

Ask yourself five questions -

1)     What do I plan to take pictures of?

2)     Where do I plan to use my camera?

3)     How much control over the composition do I want?

Looking for a Laptop (again)

I just got word that I am being considered for another position at the company I work for – and it will require me to get another laptop that runs Windows, instead of my trusty MacBook.

I’ve been looking at Toshiba and Lenovo machines as a new work machine. It doesn’t have to be super powerful, just budget friendly and lightweight.

Lenovo has some neat netbooks, but that’s not the size I’m looking for – so I’m looking in the 13.3-15 inch range. The prices online look pretty good, but then again, everything looks great at 3am, right? If I stay within budget, I could probably find a nice machine for around $600, which is a fraction of my MacBook and have a nice work computer.

Thinking of selling your site?

Domain Appraisal is the first step you should take after deciding to sell your site. Not only can you get a person to evaluate the value of your site, but you can also use the information for tax purposes or to help you decide how much to charge for advertising.

Look for domain appraisal that is non-automated and uses a variety of factors to determine the value of your site. Don’t let them just look at one or two factors and make a decision on how much your domain is worth! Look for appraisers who are experienced or have training in valuation.

Happy holidays! Most of us in the US will be celebrating Christmas on December 25, but this is also a holiday season for people of other faiths and cultures. For me, the holiday season is a time to show appreciation to the people I love and care about by exchanging gifts, spending quality time with each other and enjoying great food.

Below is my list of some great gifts for anyone on your list. They can all be purchased at Amazon.com and delivered by Christmas. I have ordered from them in the past, and their gift wrapping is professional and seasonal.

Pile of GadgetsIt is easy to get bogged down with gadgets in our digital world. Most of us have a cell phone, an iPod or MP3 player, a digital camera and a laptop which we carry with us on a regular basis.

As evidenced by my “go bag” and HarriMac‘s, there’s plenty of analog stuff we geeks carry with ourselves on a daily basis, too!

But, today, I want to help you get control of your digital world. It won’t hurt, I promise, and you’ll be feeling a lot better physically and mentally once you get rid of some things by combining them, upgrading or downgrading!
