Small Space Hacks – Make A Small Space Work for Sleep, Work, and Play

This year I’ve lived in a house but for the most part been confined to my 2 private spaces (both approximately 8×10) for everything after living on my own in nice size apartments for two years. Of the last 11 years, I lived in dorms for 8. Next year, I’m getting a roommate in a smaller space so I’m back to being in one room again. So I’ve had my share of small spaces. But how can you take a small space and make it livable without making it unbearably overcrowded and claustrophobic? Very good question. While I am not as drastic as this guy, I think there are definitely some great solutions.

Pile of GadgetsIt is easy to get bogged down with gadgets in our digital world. Most of us have a cell phone, an iPod or MP3 player, a digital camera and a laptop which we carry with us on a regular basis.

As evidenced by my “go bag” and HarriMac‘s, there’s plenty of analog stuff we geeks carry with ourselves on a daily basis, too!

But, today, I want to help you get control of your digital world. It won’t hurt, I promise, and you’ll be feeling a lot better physically and mentally once you get rid of some things by combining them, upgrading or downgrading!

SoulvilleHey everybody! I know “Soulville” has been absent lately (school rocks!), but I wanted to share some public health info about swine flu with you. A lot of people are really freaking out, but at the moment we don’t know if it’s something to freak out about and freaking out won’t help anything anyway.

Some of you guys who know me in “real” life know that I have had a lifelong battle with my weight. I heard about a neat program called Muffintopless, which is 20 women trying to loose 20 pounds. The catch is that we use Twitter to talk about our ups and downs and support each other.

My goal is definitely more than 20 pounds, but 20 pounds is the beginning. I’m already making smarter choices AND I planning on running a 5k by my 29th birthday!

Religion is taboo in some circles, but not here at ultimate geek girl! Even girl geeks have to set aside some time to give thanks for their blessings and pray for good things to happen in the world!

How long does it take to pack one bedroom?

I’m moving next month, and as I keep looking around my bedroom in my apartment, I keep wondering, how long will it take to pack one bedroom? In the two years I’ve lived here, I’ve accumulated dozens of books, at least a dozen suits, 3 coats, all kinds of knickknacks and do-dads. And somehow, I’ve got to move all of this stuff quickly and efficiently.

Unclutterer says to try to get rid of things you don’t need or duplicates, so I’ve got to do that, then I can move to actually packing things I won’t need for the next month or so, such as winter clothes, most of my books and my decorative items.

8 Ways to Ring in Spring

Spring is here! I’m so excited. Spring is my favorite season of the year, with fall close behind. Here are some things to do as the season changes to get you together in multiple parts of your life.

1. Toss old clothes. During the winter you probably were thinking of all those clothes that are clogging up your closet OR that you have lost weight and need to get some new clothes OR you just need some new clothes OR you just have too much stuff you don’t use. Take this opportunity to toss things that are too big, way too small, not your style anymore, torn up, worn out, etc. This means clothes, shoes (sneakers should be changed every 6 months or more often anyway), hats, undies, socks, athletic gear, etc.

SoulvilleThere is little doubt in my mind that almost every one reading this article has heard almost exactly what I’m going to write, but I will bet less than 1/3 of you have actually done it. What am I talking about? Preparing for a disaster. Most people in the US think of terrorist events when they hear disaster these days, but natural disasters and accidents have occurred far more often and can cause geographical, physical, emotional, and financial harm. Are you prepared?
