Taking a few minutes to just block out the world and write is one of the few joys a lot of people have left. Some of us like to put pen to paper, favoring Moleskine notebooks and fancy, expensive writing instruments, while others love “old fashioned” typing on a typewriter.
But when was the last time you saw a typewriter?
Probably many, many moons ago.
However, there is a great FREE online option that you can use that gives the same feel as a typewriter without the added distractions of Microsoft Word’s famous Clippy or formatting.
Writer is an internet typewriter. Nothing fancy to it, just a black screen where you can type to your heart’s content. If you go into full screen mode (F11), you can just focus solely on your writing, whether it is venting your frustrations or writing a blog post. See the image to the left for a sample of what Writer looks like in use.
Notable features are its autosave feature - so you won’t lose a document if you leave the page; customizable color scheme; and the ability to create an account if you want to save your documents and access across computers.
If you just want a nifty web application to use when you are having writers’ block or just want to focus solely on writing, Writer is a great option.
Check it out and let us know what you think in the comments!
This special feature, Geek Girl, appears every Monday.

Awww! I think that it works best if you just press F11 and full screen - and just focus on the typing area. It feels a lot less stressed when writing this way.
It is very simple, even the options provided are simple. Let me know how it works out for you later!
