As some of you guys know, I’m a member of several fraternal organizations. It is difficult to call hundreds of people when information needs to be passed along quickly AND accurately. So, I searched for a way to send messages and connect with my fellow club members, family and friends. There are literally dozens of reasons to use a mass messaging system – send meeting reminders, notify family of resturant location for dinner, send words of encouragement, announce an engagement – and many, many more.

One of the most dreaded chores for most computer users is finding and installing updates for your software and operating system. There are programs out there to make this process easier, and many programs have built-in update checkers.
One of the top programs for updating your software is FileHippo, which works on PCs only. However, VersionTracker works on PCs, Macs iPhone and PalmOS.

No matter which program you use, it is important to look at the settings for your software first and see if it has the capability to check on its own for updates. You might have to manually check for an update or set the program to check for updates periodically, but at least you’ll be prepared to update your software quickly!
How to Get Control of your Digital World
It is easy to get bogged down with gadgets in our digital world. Most of us have a cell phone, an iPod or MP3 player, a digital camera and a laptop which we carry with us on a regular basis.
As evidenced by my “go bag” and HarriMac‘s, there’s plenty of analog stuff we geeks carry with ourselves on a daily basis, too!
But, today, I want to help you get control of your digital world. It won’t hurt, I promise, and you’ll be feeling a lot better physically and mentally once you get rid of some things by combining them, upgrading or downgrading!
Find your new home easily with PadMapper

I am in the middle of moving to a new apartment. I used Craigslist to find my new home, but I wanted to know what other apartments were near my desired address.
PadMapper came so handy in my apartment search. I put in the address of a subway station I thought was desirable, and let PadMapper generate a map with all of the listings available on Craigslist!
Now, I can click on the red markers and look at information about specific listings and link back to the original ad on Cragislist.

Moleskine notebooks are all the rage with geeks and nerds around the world, so you know the Geek Girl had to get one, too! I picked up a black hardcover Moleskine notebook a week ago, and I have found some great uses for my Moleskine in my daily life. You can use these tips with a regular spiral bound notebook, but there’s something really special about a more expensive, durable notebook that doesn’t catch on clothes or bags and never seems to age.

Geek Girl to Customize Google: Fix It!
CustomizeGoogle is one of my most favorite Firefox add-ons. I love its breadth of features and ability to tweak Google to fit my needs. BUT, I have noticed that my favorite features of CustomizeGoogle no longer work. It is as if the Google Gods have intentionally broken the magic that made CustomizeGoogle work.
In a nutshell:
CustomizeGoogle is a Firefox extension that enhances Google search results by adding extra information (like links to Yahoo, Ask.com, MSN etc) and removing unwanted information (like ads and spam).

Every few weeks, someone at my university emails students and asks them to answer a survey about some campus services and programs. Since I use the library all the time, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to fill out the online survey. At the end, it asked for my email address if I wanted to enter to win a MacBook. I filled it out, and forgot all about it until yesterday, when someone emailed me and said, “You won a MacBook.”

Twitter seems to be taking the world by storm – whether if it is because Bo the First Dog is using it or a Brooklyn teenager is making an internet worm that exploits Twitter’s weaknesses. My favorite feature about Twitter really doesn’t have to do with Twitter.com, but instead the many, many programs that you can use Twitter with – from ways to send links to your blog posts to your Twitter account, post to your Twitter account, or use a totally different interface with fresh and cool features to use your account.
Google Introduces Google Voice!
Google Voice launched recently with a huge amount of fanfare from around the blogosphere. I’ve been a user of GrandCentral since it launched, so I was pleasantly pleased to see an upgrade to Google Voice. Unfortunately, Google Voice is still closed to new users, but keep checking back – the service will be opening to all Google users soon!
