WordPress Wednesdays

This is Step #34 in the 101 Steps to Becoming a Better Blogger.

WordPress 2.3 introduced us to built-in tagging support, which has been a great addition to every blogger’s blogging arsenal for three reasons:

  1. Tags are a great way to quickly show visitors what you blog about. Categories can be helpful to show visitors what you blog about, but tags give an extra layer of information that is a lot more specific and targeted. If a visitor only wants to read your posts on Firefox, they can quickly find them, versus searching through various categories or searching your blog.

Step #33 in the 101 Steps to Becoming a Better Blogger.

Add photos to each of your posts.

Zeiss IkonI almost always have photos on each of my posts, in part because it is fun to find a picture that illustrates my point and because it can help my visitors understand my directions or better visualize a concept.

My friend Linky over at Linky Love always adds photos to her posts, some of which make me laugh, but are always relevant.

If you don’t know how to add photos to your posts, there are several ways do do it in WordPress.

Step #32 in the 101 Steps to Becoming a Better Blogger.

Create a custom blog design. Your blog is a symbol of your brand. Make it uniquely you.

thepinkc Current themeI’ve tweaked the current theme alot, but there’s definitely a lot more that can be done. I’m not a coder by trade, but I do like poking around and finding new ways to make my site easier to use and better looking!

One thing that did help in customizing this current theme was enlisting the services of a graphic designer to create a custom banner and logos for the site.

How I improved my PR to 4 then saw it drop to 0

I’ve had a really hard time composing this post, mainly because I’ve debated about who I should be mad at – if anyone; those who gave me advice that seems to have backfired, those who introduced me to PayPerPost and other paid blogging schemes or myself, for listening to them.

Then, I got sick and have spent the entire weekend in bed, which gave me plenty of time to think about what happened and what to do next with my blog.

There’s only one reason that I think contributed to my drop in PageRank:

Better Blogger – Steps 19-31

These are steps 19-31 in the 101 Steps to Becoming a Better Blogger. I condensed these because they are all about plugins!

Install these plugins to optimize your blog:

19. Akismet – This plugin helps eliminate comment spam.

I already use Akismet, because it is one of the best ways to eliminate comment spam! I rarely get any comment spam because of Akismet’s strong filters!

20. Optimal Title – This plugin allows you to optimize the title of your blog post in order to improve your search engine rankings.

How I Find Blogging Ideas

I’ve always been an observer of people and my surroundings. Often, this is where I get the bulk of my blogging ideas. Just sitting at a banquet and listening to the conversations around me can give me tons of ideas to use for blogging, or even spark a chain reaction of brainstorming that results in me writing a fantastic post or three!

Sometimes, I suffer from major writers’ block, and this is when I “take it to the street” to see what other bloggers are blogging about. If their ideas are inspired, but not fleshed out, I may expand on their post, or even write from a differing perspective.

How I improved my PageRank from 3 to 4

Since earlier this year, I’ve been following a lot of advice from fellow bloggers and even a blog consultant, Adnan to find out how to improve thepinkc. This has meant a minor investment in money, and a major investment in time and patience, but I am pleased with the results.

Some of the Google PageRank estimators said I’d increase from 3 to 5, but as of tonight, I’m holding steady at a respectable 4.

I’m not sure what this change in PageRank will mean in the short term, but in the long term, it proves that some bloggers know what they are talking about!

Tina Silva over at her personal blog, posted a really interesting look at how one blogger keeps track of their blogs and continue publishing quality content. Tina has a blogging schedule that helps her keep track of 15 plus blogs!

I have one blog, but several weekly series that I try to keep on track; and the only way to do that is to remember what posts are due when, and even pre-write articles for publication.
