Review: Expedia TripAssist for the iPhone

I’ve been a fan of Expedia as my source of travel information for quite a while, but recently I’ve become pretty impressed with updates to their iPhone application. The best feature of the newest version I believe is the TripAssist feature. The basic premise is that you can check all details of your itinerary and it will let you know where and when you’re to be somewhere within 24 hours of your trip. It tells you gates, times, has sliding screens that let you see each leg of your trip, what seats you can get, and best of all you don’t have to book through Expedia to use it! It is very easy to add trip information no matter where you booked.

How To: Make a Bean Bag Tripod!

As you guys know, I’m an avid photographer and I love to travel. I’ve got a week long trip coming up and I’m flying to all my destinations so I went online to see if I could find a small travel tripod. The tripod I already have is about 24 inches long folded up and about five inches wide. Definitely not fitting in a daypack and I’m not a fan of tying stuff on for city exploring. I want to grab and go. After much searching and finding few options that would hold my camera weight, I started looking at photography boards about solutions. Considering that I’ll be in NYC to see Ellie, I saw that a couple places we’re going do not allow traditional tripods without a lot of hassle. But the most awesome comment suggested to use a bean bag tripod. I’d never heard of one, so of course I set out to see what I could find. I found an awesome product called THE pod, but every store I could find was sold out or would be far to expensive to get here before my trip. So I started searching for other bean bag tripods and found directions to make my own! I’ve edited them to post here and added a few helpful websites in case you’ve never sewn before or made anything like this.

Cookie, Cookie, Cookie!!

The weekend before and the week of finals I spent time baking lots of cookies. Despite all the sugary goodness that I baked, I didn’t eat most of the cookies myself – I shared and shared and shared. If you’re like me, you watch what you eat for one reason or another. But baking for me is a good mental break from all my hard tech work and at that time I really needed it (don’t all of us techies need an occasional break from computers or phones or gaming?). I don’t keep pre-packaged cookies in my house so making some is the only way (besides occassional Starbucks) that I’ll have any. But I digress – if you’re interested in some pretty basic recipes (even a complete novice can make these), here ya go. Make sure you have at least one cookie sheet and I recommend also using foil or parchment paper to cover the cookie sheet (it helps keep the cookies moving in and out of the oven).

More Free iPhone Apps for the Holidays!!

Hello readers! Very sorry this academic semester kept this column from being as regular as expected. My infinite apologies. As a gift, here’s a list of more free iPhone apps that you might find increase your productivity or your relaxation in your downtime during the holidays.

Chorus – A pretty neat application I came across that works far better than the standard App Store. It works like a social networking application and you find applications based on your interests, your friends interests, or just by a regular search. When you find an app you like, Chorus lets you know what apps are similar that you might find interesting. Just like the regular App Store, it lets you search through paid and free apps and even gives you friends to start with as you build your friend base in the program.

So you are in need of a new bag (or 2 or 3) for the year? There are so many different options – backpacks, messenger bags, sling bags, etc etc. You may know a style that you like already. Stick with it.

If you’re looking for ideas, here you go:

Backpack

Backpack – Classic back to school item. Backpacks have 2 straps (and should always be used with both straps). Typically the best bag to use if you have a LOT to carry or if you have shoulders that easily get sore with messengers, or if you’re always on the move. Can be professional (don’t get the loud colors though) and laid back at the same time.
